What policies or programs intentionally or unintentionally hurt people of color.

There is no minimum or maximum length to responses. They will be graded based on thoroughness, depth, thoughtfulness, and grammar/spelling.

1. What similarities and what differences do you notice in the policies, programs, and services created or eliminated between the Progressive Era (1900) through to Eisenhowers era (1957) and the Kennedy (1958) through the George H.W. Bush presidency (1991). In other words in terms of philosophy, priorities, policies created, those eliminated, etc. compare the eras discussed in chapters 7-10 to the era discussed in chapters 11-12. Provide specific examples with citations.

2. Discuss the status of people of color (Native Americans, Asian Americans, African Americans, and Hispanics) from 1865-1965. What specific policies or programs were created to help people of color (think of Civil Right legislation as one example). What policies or programs intentionally or unintentionally hurt people of color. Which era(s) seemed to bring the most positive progress for people of color and why? Overall, is social justice achieved for people of color over time? What else?

3. Discuss the status of women from 1865-1965. What specific policies/programs were created to help women. What policies or programs were created that intentionally or unintentionally hurt women (think specifically about TANF for one example). Which era(s) seemed to bring about the most positive progress for women and why? Overall, is social justice achieved for women over time? What else?

4. Throughout the eras discussed in the textbook there are some significant and some smaller changes in the profession of Social Work AND in the role of social workers. Pick an era (a chapter) or two that you feel has the most significant changes for the profession and role of social workers. Describe those changes using specific examples from the book.

5. The areas of social welfare with which social workers are most concerned deal with policies and programs related to children and adolescents, health care, mental health care, and social insurance. Pick one of the above and discuss the changes over two to three eras. What specifically was implements, changed, eliminated and what impact did that have on people who could potentially be our clients? (For example early in our nations history children worked alongside adults without any specific regulations or protections; later in our history children are protected from a variety of abuses, etc. in between children are affected by the policy changes related to TANF, etc.)
