The Church has many bright people; these are people who have studied, prayed, and labored faithfully in the field. That said, it is not enough to study, pray, and be faithful with regard to preaching. One must develop a certain skill set in order to effectively communicate with ones hearers.

UNIT OUTCOMES

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Most people who have spent any time listening to preaching and teaching have encountered the bad sermon; either the content was poor, the delivery was poor, or both. We have spent earlier course weeks examining content. At this point, the student should be able to choose and exegete a passage, and then put together a message. But this is only part of the preaching equation. It does not matter how good your preaching material is; if you do not engage the audience with some kind of interesting delivery, they will not listen to you.

Sitting through bad Gospel communication is painful. If we have examined the characteristics of good delivery, what are the bad or ineffective characteristics?
At this point, we want you to examine the Gospel communication of someone you do not want to emulate. In other words, you want to avoid doing what they are doing in their Gospel communication.

INSTRUCTIONS
1. Think of someone (please keep their identity anonymous) who you have heard communicate the Gospel, and who, in your opinion, did poorly. This could be either a local or national figure.
a. What was the occasion or setting?
b. What did they do that made them a a poor speaker?
c. Did you have a difficult time following them, and if so, why?
d. Did they fail to hold your attention, and if so, why?
e. How did they handle (or mishandle) the Word?
f. What was it about their appearance, delivery, or personality that you may have found offensive or unappealing?
g. Be as descriptive as you can in stating why you do not want to emulate this Gospel communicator.
