Identify the theory you wish to use and briefly say why it might convince Gyges or Bacon to be moral.

Write a paper on the topic below. The paper should be 1200–1500 words long. It should be double-spaced, with normal margins, and in 12-point font. A draft of the paper is due in class for peer review on Friday, February 17. The final paper is due on Friday, February 24. Please submit it to the “Paper #1” folder on the Blackboard course website by Friday, February 24, not later than 11:15am. Please also bring a hard copy (stapled) to class on Friday, February 24.

Note: There isnt any need to cite material this time, except if you are directly quoting material (including from lectures). If you directly quote material without putting it inside quotation marks and giving a citation, then youre plagiarizing. Dont do that.

Topic: Assume you want to convince Gyges, or Kevin Bacons character in the movie Hollow Man, to be moral. Of the theories we have considered (divine command theory, social contract theory, Humes view of morality as sentiment, Kants deontological view, and utilitarianism), which theory do you think provides the best argument to convince Gyges or Bacon to be moral?

Reconstruct an argument to convince them, as follows:

Identify the theory you wish to use and briefly say why it might convince Gyges or Bacon to be moral.
Lay out an argument, based on the theory you have chosen, to convince Gyges or Bacon: (i) clearly state each premise; (ii) for each premise, say why one should believe it; (iii) state the conclusion of the argument; and (iv) say why the conclusion follows from the premises.
Identify a potential objection to the argument, i.e., an objection that targets one of the premises.
