Capstone Project
Begin your MSN Capstone Project Executive Summary with an introduction to catch the reader’s attention, briefly identify your quality improvement project within your MSN specialization track. The reader should want to read what you have written. Include a brief summary of what is to follow in this paper. The body of this paper should be between 5 and 6 pages in length. This is an Executive Summary. Please reference resources to explore use of
Executive Summaries.
The Problem and Its Background
In this section of the Executive Summary describe the problem you are proposing to solve. Include a succinct description of the problem, its background, and support the importance of solving this problem by including a brief literature review. Your review of the literature should include a minimum of three, peer-reviewed professional nursing articles that are not older than five years. See the grading rubric for additional detail.
Purpose
In this section describe in detail the purpose of the project and how it proposes to solve the identified problem. Include references that support your chosen solution. This section should identify all stakeholders that will be impacted by this project: who does this project effect and in what manner?
Timeline
This section of your paper should describe the overall timeline with key milestones or deliverables from conceptual design of the project through analysis of the proposed project’s evaluation plan. Include an Appendix that then details the project’s timeline, key stakeholders, and proposed time to completion for each step/phase of your proposed project.
Budget
This section of the Executive Summary should include the projected cost of the project from conception through analysis of the evaluation plan. Include all projected salary and materials expenses for this quality improvement project. If you do not wish to use or have access to current employment salaries, use state or national workforce salary data to propose salary costs for all personnel involved in your quality improvement project. This section should be supported with a detailed budget as an
Appendix.
Proposed Implementation
Describe in this section how you plan to implement the project, what needs completed to successfully implement the proposed project. You will not actually implement the project, however, you should create enough detail in this section, with an associated Appendix that the reader could implement your planned project. For example, if you are proposing use of a new clinical evaluation tool, the proposed tool should be in the appendices. Or, if you are proposing a change to the electronic health records to solve a persistent clinical problem, then include the proposed changes in detail in this appendix. Again, the reader should be able to take this Executive Summary and its attachments to full implementation.
Evaluation and Data Analysis
Describe in detail your plan to evaluate this project from concept through implementation. How will you know you are on target with timeline and budget? How will you determine the project’s outcomes? Design at least one evaluation tool or include the proposed evaluation tool as a part of this project as an Appendix.
Conclusion
Succinctly bring your Executive Summary to a close with a summary paragraph of the proposed project to solve a quality improvement project in your specialization and how implementation of this project is a cost-effective solution for this organization. Include a brief summary to bring this paper to closure.
