How do you know if this was a quality literature review?

Qualitative Study

I. Cilliers, F., & Terblanche, L. (2014). The role of spirituality in coping with the demands of the hospital culture amongst fourth-year nursing students. International Review of Psychiatry, 26(3), 279-288.

Literature Review Analysis:

The objective of current research is to investigate the relationship between roles of spirituality and development of hospital culture among the nursing students of the 4th year. The study is qualitative in nature. Regarding the literature review of the study, the literature review discusses the concept of spirituality, the operationalization of spirituality, and the relationship of spirituality with other variables.

The literature review of research is much diversified in nature, and it discusses spirituality in all perspectives including religious, political, social and humanistic approach. The current study identified a literature gap from existing research about spirituality in the form of “absence of clear and comprehensive conceptualization of spirituality .” The first portion of literature review entitled as Conceptualizing Spirituality fill this research gap through creating a profile of spirituality in nursing. The concept of spirituality has been defined both in religious and psychological perspective and it gives the proper introduction to both depth and breadth of spirituality.

The second portion of literature review entitled as operationalizing spirituality discusses the various dimensions of spirituality through operationalizing the concept. The self (intrapersonal behavior and inner resources), the other (interpersonal behavior, relationships) and the sacred (connectedness with the universe) are various concepts discussed under this heading. Under self, the author discusses those factors which cause the motivation on an individual level. Self-awareness, personal boundaries, simplicity, solitude, submission, and exploration of emotional feelings are factors involved in self-motivation. In the case of other, inter-connection and inter-dependence are two factors which caused the motivation. In sacred, the relationship of an individual to the universe, God and divine are discussed Cilliers & Terblanche, 2014() .

Through doing the comprehensive literature on the concept of spirituality, themes are developed and then these themes are compared with the findings of the study. In this way, the validity of existing literature and consistency of results are checked. The structure of research and arrangement of concepts is appreciable. However, there is little discussion about nursing concepts and hospital culture. Apart from this, there is no evidence from the previous literature regarding the relationship between spirituality and nursing roles .

Quantitative Study

II. Yang C.-Y., Tsai J.-C., Huang Y.-C., & Lin C.-C. (2011). Effects of a home-based walking program on perceived symptom and mood status in postoperative breast cancer women receiving adjuvant chemotherapy. Journal of Advanced Nursing. 67, 158–168.

Literature Review Analysis:

The current study investigates the relationship between home-based walking exercise program and symptoms of breast cancer in women. The study has a comprehensive introduction, background and study design. Although there is no heading regarding the literature review of the study, however, the mentioned three heading give good explanation and history of variables under study. The introduction of study defined the concept of breast cancer in women, stages of breast cancer, the severity of problems and current statistics of breast cancer. At the end, the aim of study and setting has been discussed.

The background of study describes the history of breast cancer in women, therapies being sued for the treatment of breast cancer and findings of previous studies regarding the breast cancer. A comprehensive comparison has been done between the previous literature about breast cancer and current literature of breast cancer. In this way, literature identified the improvement in research with the passage of time and also identified various research gaps. The research gap of the current study is also identified from background portion.

According to the authors of the current study, there is literature about breast cancer; however, there are few studies that discussed the relationship between home-based walking therapies and treatment of breast cancer. So the current study is designed to meet this gap through investigating this relationship in association with adjuvant chemotherapy. The addition of adjuvant chemotherapy is a contribution from the current study Yang, Tsai, Huang, & Lin, 2011() . As the study is quantitative in nature, so the literature portion of the study is short as compared to qualitative as the focus of the quantitative study is on analysis portion, use of statistical tools and findings of the study. However, the concepts and variables involved in the study are briefly discussed and background of study can be treated as the literature review of the study.

LaTanya,

You are on the right track with your discussion. You need to determine whether the literature review did in fact support the need for each study and how do you know that? What tells you that the literature the researchers presented was enough or quality? You need scholarly support for these ideas. Please review, revise and resubmit.

Thanks,

Pat

Is this a quote? It must be cited.

How do you know if this was a quality literature review? What does the textbook require for a literature review for a qualitative research study? Are the other scholarly references that tell you what might be required for literature review?

Who says this should be the way it is?? Why would the literature review be shorter for quantitative than qualitative? The literature review is helping the reader identify the need for the research study to happen.
