Although I am happy that everything is now computerized and encrypted for the safety and privacy of patients, hackers are getting smarter along with our systems. To overcome this ethical concern, our healthcare specialist and IT team have combined a group of people that come together and play a “Hackaton” which is led by a medicine hacking team to find flaws within the EHR and find resolutions. The article by Tatyana G. (2017), describes this as a method of investigation to overcome existing barriers and implement new procedures, firewalls, and solutions to these concerns. The Hackaton was used by many like Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston and Children’s Hospital, but is not broadly recognized yet; presumed to have positive results in the future. The major concerns that need to be resolved now are issues that are easily modifiable by the professionals themselves by simply logging of computers after using them, instead of leaving the screen open and walking about, not sharing access keys, not texting patient information to others, and not leaving patient information unattended by a professional (St. Thomas University’s, 2019.) Yes, all of the mentioned above are many forms of patient information leakage that is an ethical concern. In my opinion, the biggest concern with nursing informatics is the transfer of information. For example, nurse informatics covers a variety of sections such as financial reports nursing notes auditing, and sending and receiving lab results. Not only for Nursing, but informatics for all healthcare fields is vital to accurate and professional client care outcomes. Nursing informatics emphasizes that integrations of nursing science with analytical and information sciences helps manages and identify data and information in nursing practice (McCormick, 2015). As a major component of modern healthcare, nurses use computers and electronic devices to search and communicate information at convenient speeds, such as viewing diagnostic tests results, nursing notes, schedules, care protocols and more. But with these benefits come risks and ethical concerns. Legislation like HIPPA have been implemented to protect against exposure and abuse of health information, all while allowing authorized personnel, those taking care of the patient, to access it. From my personal experience I have spoken with many nurses that expressed concern about the ethical risks with informatics, such as regarding HIPPA requirements need to be met to protect patient information. From what I have been taught and told by other nurses, there are concerning risks. For instance, failing to log off of computer can leave a clients information exposed. Lending passwords, losing electronic devices, failing to shred printouts, and even texting patient information are ethical concerns that are often brought u p by nurses I have interacted with.
